Sunshine Coast faces 'very dire situation' with historic low water supply levels

An ongoing drought on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast has caused the region's water supply to reach historic low levels, and local authorities are warning of a "very dire situation" if it continues. The Sunshine Coast Regional District has been at Stage 4 water restrictions since Aug. 31, banning all outdoor use, and an emergency operations centre was established last week to respond to the crisis.

An agreement between Canada and the U.S. that has improved and protected the water quality of the Great Lakes and also improved the lives of millions across the basin celebrated its 50th anniversary recently. On April 15, 1972, the two countries signed a water quality agreement to collaborate on the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes. Under the water quality agreement, the two countries engaged state and provincial governments, municipalities and local authorities, First Nations, Métis and Tribal governments, industry, non-governmental organizations and the public in working together to achieve a healthy and sustainable ecosystem across the lakes for the benefit of present and future generations.

Toward The Creation Of A Canada Water Agency Environment And Climate Change Canada Seeks Comments On Discussion Paper

The federal government seeks feedback on whether the objectives outlined in the Discussion Paper are the right objectives for the government to pursue and input on which objectives should be prioritized. Input is sought from provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples, local authorities, the private sector, non-government organizations, and the public. Feedback will inform the federal government's next steps in implementing the CWA. The deadline for providing feedback on the Discussion Paper is March 1, 2021. Information about where to send responses is provided in the Discussion Paper. In January 2021, the federal government will host a virtual national freshwater policy forum. A series of regional forums will be held in February 2021 to provide further opportunities for Canadians to participate in consultations on the Discussion Paper.
