Waters off the coast of Florida as hot as a hot tub, and more heat news from around the world

The water temperature off southern Florida has been about 38 C two days in a row: that's as hot as a hot tub, as hot as the maximum recommended heat for a baby's bath, and hotter than what's usually recommended for a pregnant woman. It's also, meteorologists say, possibly the hottest seawater ever measured.

Arctic Ocean acidifying up to four times faster than any other sea on Earth

What may be the broadest and longest study to date has found Canada's Arctic Ocean is growing more acidic up to four times faster than any other sea on the planet. The acidification, linked to the loss of sea ice, will have unknown repercussions for the life in those waters, said Wei-Jun Cai, an oceanographer at the University of Delaware and co-author of the study in the journal Science.

‘Atmospheric river’ rainstorm headed for Fraser Valley, up to 70 mm expected

A heavy rainstorm is expected to hit the Fraser Valley, bringing 50 to 70 millimetres of rain, according to a warning from Environment Canada. Meteorologists call this type of rain pattern an “atmospheric river.” It’s caused by narrow regions in the atmosphere transporting water vapor outside the tropics. Once the vapor hits land, it releases in the form of rain or snow.
