These are the directions for performing the tests that you will refer to each time you need to determine the total chlorine, free chlorine or ammonia concentration of a water sample.
It is important to follow these testing instructions very closely. Extra test strips are not provided so you will need to make each one count.
Total Chlorine Concentration Test
1. Have your water sample in a plastic cup and ready to test.
2. Dip a total chlorine test strip into the cup for 5 seconds with constant back and forth motion through the sample so that water passes through the small aperture in the test strip.
3. Remove and shake the test strip once, briskly, to remove any excess water on the strip. Allow the test strip to dry for 30 seconds by lying it across the top of the cup.
4. Within 15 seconds match with the best colour to determine the Total Chlorine concentration in mg/L. When matching the colour it is best to hold the strip over a dark surface and look at it from the side where you can only see the colour changing test pad through the circular hole.
5. Remember to record your results.
6. After the concentration has been determined the sample can be disposed of and the cup should be rinsed.
Free Chlorine Concentration Test
1. Have your water sample in a plastic cup and ready to test.
2. Dip one free chlorine test strip into the cup for 20 seconds with constant back and forth motion through the sample so that water passes through the small aperture in the test strip.
3. Remove and shake the test strip once, briskly, to remove any excess water on the strip. Allow the test strip to dry for 20 seconds by laying it across the top of the cup.
4. Within one minute match with the best colour to determine the free chlorine concentration in mg/L. Look at the strip from the side where you can only see the colour changing test pad through the circular hole.
5. Remember to record your results.
6. After the concentration has been determined the sample can be disposed of and the cup should be rinsed.
Ammonia Concentration Test
1. Pour your water sample into a beaker.
2. Dip ammonia test strip into water for five seconds
3. Remove ammonia test strip with pad face up
4. Hold level for 60 seconds. Do not shake off excess water.
5. Compare the colour on the test strip to the colours on the colour chart after the 60 seconds have elapsed in order to determine the ammonia concentration.
6. Remember to record your results.
7. After the concentration has been determined the sample can be disposed of and the beaker can be rinsed and recycled.
